Real trailed by a goal from the first leg but two Cristiano Ronaldo strikes – the first a penalty, the second a neat low finish – put them in control. However, Arjen Robben levelled the tie for Bayern with a spot kick of his own. No further goals meant a shoot-out, which Bastian Schweinsteiger settled to send his team to a final on home turf. The midfielder was not his side’s only hero in the shoot-out. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer played a major part, saving Real’s first two penalties – from Ronaldo and Kaka, while Mario Gomez and David Alaba scored for Bayern. This was the second time in major Champions League shoot-outs that Ronaldo had missed from the spot, having also failed for Manchester United in the 2008 final against Chelsea. It also means the two players currently rated the world’s best have missed key penalties in successive days following Lionel Messi’s failure from the spot for Barcelona on Tuesday. The Blues were in serious trouble after goals from Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta put Barca ahead either side of Terry’s red card for violent conduct. But Ramires strode forward to chip the away side back ahead in the tie. Lionel Messi hit the bar with a penalty for Barca and Fernando Torres ran clear to seal the tie in injury time. Earlier in the week, Torres had said “the best team does not always win”. His words proved gloriously prophetic for England’s last men standing in Europe as they fought tooth and nail to scrap their way past the continent’s finest and into the final in Munich on 19 May. The game turned logic on its head. Holders Barcelona had scored 102 goals at the Nou Camp this campaign and were unbeaten in 15 European home fixtures dating back to October 2009, having won 13 and drawn two, during which time they had scored 18 goals. However, a number of factors combined to give Chelsea a hope heading into the second leg: their last three visits [...]

Ugandan Police Officer Suspended Over Ingrid Turinawe Breast Harrassment

Issues

Forum for Democratic Change

Ingrid Turinawe

sexual abuse

sexual harrassment
<guid

Footage shows an officer squeezing the breast of Ingrid Turinawe of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) during her arrest ahead of a rally last week. Deputy police chief Andrew Kaweesa has apologised, saying the incident will be investigated. Uganda’s opposition says police regularly harass them during protests. Since President Yoweri Museveni’s controversial 2011 re-election, there has been a wave of opposition demonstrations – many of which have ended in violence and arrests. “How would you feel if we squeezed your balls?” But correspondents say Ugandans are outraged by the arrest on Friday of Ms Turinawe, who is the head of the Women’s League of the FDC led by Kizza Besigye. Ugandan television footage clearly shows that, as several officers tried to pull her out of her vehicle, another grabbed and squeezed her breast – and she is heard shouting out in pain. Sometimes we call them obnoxious, self-seeking or self-absorbed or narcissist. Well according to a study to be published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, this trait which is considered unbearable in most circumstances, actually pays off a great deal in the immediate perspective of a job interview. The researchers found that self-absorbed individuals or narcissists scored much higher in simulated job interviews than non-narcissists. They pointed to narcissists’ innate tendency to promote themselves, in part by engaging and speaking at length, which implied confidence and expertise even when they were held to account by expert interviewers. If you were brought up with the theory that humility is a virtue, that theory is still valid today, so hold on to it. Nevertheless, learning how to talk with confidence about what you’ve accomplished and how you did it is admirable and is not considered pride. In fact, you’re expected to know how to do that if you want to stay competitive in today’s job market and economy. You don’t have to [...]

Soccer Passion in Men

Motivation & Self-Help

Personal Branding

Personal Growth

Student Center

passion

personal discipline

soccer

soccer fanatics

youth development
<guid

Though I admit being a soccer fan, but cant find my place amongst the myriad of men who seems to live for soccer viz-a-viz their respective club sides. It is a common trend to observe loyalists of a particular club using items and symbols associated with there clubs to identify themselves in public especially following a winning encounter with an opposing side. Sometimes, patriots goes as far as betting with cash or kind to support there club’s victory ahead of a match. No wonder, sports especially soccer has been identified as a ‘tool’ for national and international integration. Why cant similar or more passion be shown to those you live for, to those you work for, to those you love so much than for soccer, that which just satisfies your craving for entertainment and adds little or no value to your welfare and those of your family? by Solomon Johnson . I can appreciate that some of you reading this have nothing do with football or perhaps don’t even understand the sports. However, give me a moment to share with you a lesson I believe we can all learn from the Mr. Manning’s departure from the Colts.
You’re not irreplaceable: I got interested in American football just about 5 year ago and over this period, I observed that Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts were almost synonymous. Folks who have followed the league longer will say the same thing. Since Mr. Manning joined the Colts in 1990, he worked hard and gave more to the team than anyone did. He won Super Bowl with the team. Sadly, during the 2011 season, he had a neck injury and underwent a surgery. His team without him ended the season with memorable 2 win and 14 losses.

Fight Against Malaria Compromised by Resistance Spread

Issues

Science and Technology

artemisinin resistance

malaria

Plasmodium falciparum

resistance
<guid

They have confirmed that resistant strains of the malaria parasite on the border between Thailand and Burma, 500 miles (800km) away from previous sites. Researchers say that the rise of resistance means the effort to eliminate malaria is “seriously compromised”. The details have been published in The Lancet medical journal. For many years now the most effective drugs against malaria have been derived from the Chinese plant, Artemisia annua. It is also known as sweet wormwood. In 2009 researchers found that the most deadly species of malaria parasites, spread by mosquitoes, were becoming more resistant to these drugs in parts of western Cambodia. This new data confirms that these Plasmodium falciparum parasites that are infecting patients more than 500 miles away on the border between Thailand and Burma are growing steadily more resistant. The researchers from the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit measured the time it took the artemisinin drugs to clear parasites from the bloodstreams of more than 3,000 patients. Over the nine years between 2001 and 2010, they found that drugs became less effective and the number of patients showing resistance rose to 20%. She becomes southern Africa’s first female head of state after taking the oath before parliament in the Malawian capital, Lilongwe. Ms Banda, who had been vice-president since 2009, was cheered and applauded before, during and after the ceremony. Mr Mutharika, 78, went into cardiac arrest on Thursday, although his death was not confirmed until Saturday. The delay in announcing his death had prompted fears of a power struggle. There had been speculation that the late president’s inner circle was trying to circumvent Malawi’s constitution to prevent Ms Banda from taking over and instead install his brother, Foreign Minister Peter Mutharika. Ms Banda had fallen out with Mr Mutharika in 2010 and became one of his fiercest critics. She was expelled from the ruling Democratic People’s Party (DPP) and formed the People’s Party. She was elected as vice-president in 2009 and Mr Mutharika had failed in his attempts to have her removed from her post. In taking the oath of office, Ms Banda pledged to “defend and preserve the constitution” and to do right to all manner of people, according to law.
