Before You Click That Mouse

Most people especially in the corporate ‘world’ are conversant with the quotation above in-part which concludes with: ”do a re-check”, or with any other grammartical structure suitable to the writer/speaker depending on its purpose cum contextual usage. Due to the advent of infotech and its consequential effect on our lives viz-a-viz business activities, hardly is there any corporate firm regardless of its size and module operandi that does not operate with the use of computers. Gone where the days when businesses runned on paperwork en-mass, conversely today, most information are stored, processed and saved in computers, making work easy and fast to execute.

As an employee, how do you handle tasks delegated to you by your boss or supervisor/s in the office. Take for instance, a boss briefing you to type a short memo for official use. Imagine you have a very short period of time at your disposal to act as instructed by your supervisor. Two possiblities exist; one, that you would quickly within the time left typesett the memo and then move swiftly as with a predating hyena to your supervisor’s office for submission, alternatively, you would type as fast as you can, then do a thorough re-check on what you typed to ensure that words, phrases, clauses and sentences wrongly typed are rectified. Sometimes, an experienced colleague may be contacted to help edit your work.

Out of the two scenarios just painted above, which do you ‘fall’ when decisions are to be taken in life, especially major decision that could in a short and long term basis affect you as the originator and others either positively or otherwise. In life, all human activities revolve round TIME…especially for those who live in cross-mopolitan cities such as LAGOS,NEW-YORK, LONDON, TOKYO, SEOUL, et al, making decisions even on minute issues of life may not be easy given various demands craving for our attention within a limited time. Realistically, quoting the words of an Unknown author: ”Most of the problems in life are because of two reasons; we ACT without thinking or we keep thinking without ACTING”. The former in the aforementioned statement testifies and add credence to the subject matter.

At this juncture, I will like to share a personal experience to further buttress my point. I was in the company of a friend to the office in the early hours of a day when a call(number-hidden) beeped my phone. Out of curiosity, I picked up the call with mixed feeling only for the caller to ask me to guess who was speaking. Coincidentally, I was in expectation of a friend’s call from the UK, so I mentioned my friend’s name and the fraudster set the pace. To cut the story short, I was eventually asked to help make a cash deposit while in expectation of gifts. By impulse, I was carried away, however, I was able to prevent an imminent fraud because I did a ‘re-check’. I questioned why the caller hid his number and quickly sent an email to my genuine friend to ascertain claim which was responded to pronto otherwise.

The list are inexhaustible of religious laws, cultural/societal parlance that put us on the check as it were, making a pre-cautionary call in the air, warning us to be prudent in our ways especially when faced with lives decisions. Suffice to state that as imperfect creatures, many a decision we make which are a reflection of our natural composition, however, if ONLY we can with sheer resolution be determined to always meditate carefully before making that decision and when necessary, make consultations with appropriate individuals before taking that step, relationships would improve among family ties and friends, fraud and associated social menace would be curtailed as we make the world a safer place for all.
