Malia, Sasha in Media Spotlight During Africa

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — A weeklong trip to Africa with their mother has offered a rare look at Malia and Sasha Obama, sisters who are largely kept out of public view.

Malia, who enters her teenage years when she turns 13 next month, and Sasha, her 10-year-old sibling, have been two steps behind first lady Michelle Obama on practically all her stops in southern Africa this week. It has given both the American and African media a long look at the sisters whose private lives their parents have tried to keep private.

When they moved into the White House, the Obamas asked the news media to keep a respectful distance from the girls and refrain from photographing them at school, at weekend soccer games or at times when they weren’t with their parents. The White House even objected to coverage of their daughters at official events in the White House.

But there was no such restriction on Mrs. Obama’s good-will visit to Africa, which began Monday night when her plane, dubbed “Brightstar,” landed on a chilly night at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa.

The girls joined their mother, as well as their grandmother and two cousins who are traveling with the first lady, on well-documented public outings to Nelson Mandela’s foundation and several museums.

They met living heroes of the movement against South Africa’s system of racial separation, including Mandela himself, who spent 27 years in prison for conspiring to abolish apartheid, and former Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu, another elder of the movement. They met Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, and Antoinette Sithole, whose 13-year-old brother, Hector Pieterson, became a symbol of the fight against apartheid when he was gunned down by police in the black township of Soweto in June 1976 as students protested peacefully against the white government.

Malia and Sasha painted and played dancing games with children at several other stops. At a day-care center in the Johannesburg shantytown of Zandspruit, they and their mother took turns reading Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat in the Hat” to a group of 3- and 6-year-olds. Many people were surprised to hear the girls’ voices; they almost never talk aloud in public. Both read their parts with gusto.

Mrs. Obama acknowledged that her daughters are on the world stage this week.

“It’s a balance, but our priority will always be protecting their privacy,” she told ABC News in an interview Thursday. “It won’t be often that you see them reading ‘The Cat in the Hat,’ but I think this was an important exception for them.”

Aides say that there’s been no change in policy toward media treatment of the girls and that Mrs. Obama remains determined to help them have as normal a childhood as possible.

Mrs. Obama often talks to young people about the importance of traveling and experiencing other parts of the world. Her daughters apparently are no exception.

Malia and Sasha have listened intently as researchers explained Mandela’s personal writings and as guides led them around museums that explored painful chapters in South Africa’s past as a country that separated its blacks and whites. And as if to say, “Stick with me,” they stayed close to two cousins who traveled with the family, Leslie and Avery Robinson, 15 and 19, respectively. The Robinsons live in Oregon with their father, Craig, who is Michelle’s brother. Unlike their cousins, the Robinson siblings aren’t growing up in a fishbowl.

Kristina Schake, Mrs. Obama’s communications director, said the first lady wanted her girls on the trip with her because she didn’t want them to miss out on a remarkable experience because of who they are. She also knew her daughters could handle a full week in the media glare because they are poised, polite and smart.

“This was a unique week,” Schake said.

Naked gym in Spain to Battle Recession

A gym in Spain’s Basque region has come up with an eye-catching way of battling the recession.

It has begun offering naked workouts, for nudists.

Easy Gym in Arrigorriaga is the first of its kind in Spain, pioneering the peculiar practice of stripping while keeping fit.

“With the crisis we noticed there were fewer people using the gym,” owner Merche Laseca explained to the BBC.

“I’m not a nudist myself, though I have no problem with it. But this initiative is about the money.”

Naked enthusiasm

The gym did its research before opting to chase the nudist euro.

It discovered that two local swimming pools already offered popular monthly sessions for bathing in your birthday suit.

Every year, in nearby Sopelana, there is a mass naked run along the sands.

“Doing sport without clothes is natural – and much more comfy”

There are at least 12 naturist beaches in the Basque region, and many more all over the Spanish coast.

“We’re always interested in new activities,” explains Maite Vicuna, president of the Basque Naturist Association, who attended a trial run of the naked gym last week.

A poll of the group’s members showed 90% support for a facility offering the full range of nude workouts.

“Doing sport without clothes is natural – and much more comfy,” Ms Vicuna argues.

Sceptics suggest that running full tilt in the buff might not be entirely enjoyable, though. Sports underwear, they point out, was invented for a reason.

But the gym owner denies her concept is impractical.

“Being a naturist doesn’t mean being daft. If a woman needs to, she can put a top on!” says Merche Laseca. “But there’s cycling, weightlifting and the Stairmaster: there’s lots you can easily do naked.”

Easy Gym stresses it does provide towels for comfort and “to prevent slippage” on the equipment.

But some sporting types are clearly unconvinced by the concept.

Malawi Anti-Flatus Law Continues to Make News Across The World

A few weeks ago, some of you read an article here about a new legislation in the Malawian Parliament aiming to criminalize the passing of gas or flatulence in public. The Malawian public flatus law continues to make news in the US and across the world.

Some are calling it a long-overdue law others are calling it insane or just too much government interference. One of the opponents is Ms Whoopi, the outspoken host of the ABC show the View

“I don’t think my future travel plans will include the African nation of Malawi,” Whoopi Goldberg joked recently on “The View.”

Locals fear that it might prove hard to pin an offense on a particular person, given how easy it is for people to blame others for flatulence.

To fix that problem with the proposed law, Whoopi offered up a simple fix:

“It should include ‘he who smelt it dealt it.'”

It will be news to say that most African dictators are often unconventional, but this new law has set the African nation of Malawi into a frenzy. The dictator Bingu wa Mutharika has so far not been bothered by the call for democracy the sweeping across the continent and therefore has his peace to worry about the quality of outdoor air in Malawi. Census polling data of the nation reveals people with jobs and who live in actual cities eat a typical diet of fried, salty foods. This eating habits of Malawian result in a higher incidence of flatulence which apparently upset wa Matharika.[ad#Adsense-200by200sq]

Jermaine Jackson Released From Burkina Faso?

As we posted here last week, Jermaine Jackson, the brother of the pop Star Michael Jackson, was stuck in Burkina Faso, Africa, due to an expired passport and unpaid child support worth about $91,921. Jackson owes the money in back child support to Alejandra Genevieve Oaziaza, the mother of his two sons.
Under California law, unpaid payments exceeding $2,500 per month are grounds for the individual’s passport to automatically be flagged. According to the law, Jackson’s passport could not be renewed until the excessive amount was paid in full.

Surprisingly, however, sources from RadarOnline.com say they spotted Jackson driving through Calabasas, California earlier this weekend.

“He was driving a white Range Rover and had a blonde in the front seat next to him,” the witness claimed. “He was laughing and looked like he didn’t have a care in the world.”

It is not clear yet whether Jackson got amnesty from the US Embassy in Ouagadougou and also whether the unpaid child support has been settled.
Are you surprised such a word class celebrity owes child support dues? Do you think Jackson should have been allowed to come back to the US if he still has not paid the child support?

Asamoah Gyan Was Never in Legon With Obaa Yaa, Spokesperson

Asamoah Gyan (left) and Obaa Yaa (right)

A spokesperson for the  famed Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan,  has denied reports that Gyan was seen with Obaa Yaa in the East Legon neighborhood late December of last year.

The woman in the story, Obaa Yaa, made worldwide headlines a few weeks ago by publicly admitting her infatuation with the Ghana hitman and vowed to commit suicide unless Gyan marries her.

A few websites reported later that after visiting Egypt for the Confederation of African Football Award ceremony, Gyan made a stop in Ghana before continuing his trip to join his English side, Sunderland Football Club. The sources alleged that it was during this time that Gyan was spotted near an East Legon Night Club with Obaa Yaa.

The Spokesperson, speaking on condition of anonymity because the football ace has not officially authorized her to address the rumors, said the stories are purely fabricated and that there is absolutely no truth in them.

Asked whether Gyan has made any decision with regards to Obaa Yaa’s proposal, the spokesperson did not answer directly but rather said “at the moment, Gyan is focused on helping his Sunderland side qualify for the European Championship and that is all he thinks about”.
