Interviewing: Have you set the stage?

Interviewing is a process, during which you and your potential new employer are getting to know each other. First, the company is interested in your skills (can you do the job?).  During later stages, they will be more interested in your motivations (will you love the job?) and personality (will we enjoy working with you?).  You want to learn about the job, and the corporate culture.  At each step, thorough preparation is your key to success.

Do Your Due Diligence

Before any interview, learn as much about the organization as possible.  Read their web site, know their products, learn about the industry and their competitors, read recent press releases and current stockholder information (if a public company).  Learn what sets them apart from their competitors (low-cost?, high quality?, personal service?).  Read their web site, and explore other information sources including recent news reports, financial industry reports (Standard and Poor’s, Hoovers, Google Finance), and recent patent filings. What Makes Remarkable Entrepreneurs

This essay is about entrepreneurs. Some of us reading this article may be entrepreneurs or at least call ourselves so. The fact is, many may qualify to be called entrepreneurs but few can be described remarkable – the folks who turn the world around and make a real difference. These people have some qualities in them that the rest of don’t have.

One of these qualities in remarkable entrepreneurs is that they uncompromisingly hunt for new experiences continually. They never get stuck in something regardless of how exciting or comforting it might be. You may pause for a moment and write down the names of a few well-known ground-breaking entrepreneurs and check whether they pass this test. Chances are that they will all past the ‘novelty –seeking’ test.

I assume that these folks ask themselves while on a current task is ‘what would the future be if I tried something  new’ and ‘is it possible I could make a greater impact by doing something else (may be in addition to what I’m doing now)’

When you get bored or have less to do, do you fill in with drugs, excessive alcohols and other destructive activities? You can learn from these remarkable entrepreneurs. Find something new and challenging to do. Ask about how that will make the future better for you and your community. If you can practice that, you’re on your way to be like one of them.

Soccer Passion in Men

I have observed with keen interest in recent years the level of passion exhibited by men of all ages , status, color et al for soccer. Though I admit being a soccer fan, but cant find my place amongst the myriad of men who seems to live for soccer viz-a-viz their respective club sides. It is a common trend to observe loyalists of a particular club using items and symbols associated with there clubs to identify themselves in public especially following a winning encounter with an opposing side. Sometimes, patriots goes as far as betting with cash or kind to support there club’s victory ahead of a match. No wonder, sports especially soccer has been identified as a ‘tool’ for national and international integration.

Why cant similar or more passion be shown to those you live for, to those you work for, to those you love so much than for soccer,  that which just satisfies your craving for entertainment and adds little or no value to your welfare and those of your family? by Solomon Johnson

The Big Picture

No one can achieve any worthwhile achievement without seeing the picture ahead. What this implies is that the future you cannot picture you cannot capture it. Everything that we see without is a product of the picture within. What kind of future do you picture in your mind? Are you so limited by your current circumstances that you cannot see beyond your reality now? No matter what you are going through at the moment, the good news is that if you can dream it you can actually achieve it.

As a university undergraduate I had only a pair of trousers and two shirts. The pair of trousers was brown in colour and this afforded me the opportunity to wear it for a long period of time without washing! Anytime I washed it I had to tie a wrapper, with supplication to God that it would not rain. Otherwise, it would be a disaster. Besides this, I also could not afford to buy lecture materials. So I resorted to borrowing reading materials from colleagues. I would read these materials with voracious appetite as I had to return them on time. It was really a life of struggle, toiling and anguish. In all of these however, I never for once saw myself as a failure. I forged ahead like a Trojan as I could see clearly the big picture – The big picture of a better tomorrow, when I will become a solution provider, when what I was going through would be used to encourage others in similar situations. Take Charge of Your Career Growth

There is a Danish proverb that says “He who is afraid of asking is ashamed of learning.”

Whatever career that you are in- a sales representative, a scientist, an accountant, a nurse, or whatever-, your managers or supervisors expect the best from you.

To fit in today’s work environment, school atmosphere or any situation, you need to learn how to ask for what you need. It’s vital to let your bosses and supervisors stay abreast with what you need to be able perform your daily job description as well as to advance you career in the short, medium and long term. And you must learn to ask and have it on record because in the final analysis, you cannot blame the lack of the latest software, an equipment failure, an office space or a colleague for your non-performance or failure. You will need to own them.

Be responsible for your own growth. For instance, if you believe membership in a particular professional organization is vital for your growth, ask for your manager to sponsor your membership. Even when you know the chances of refusal are high, ask anyway. That’s how it is done.

Folks who have been in the industry longer will tell us one thing: the landscape has changed, and it is a big change. Gone are the days when you got hired after college and you were certain that you were going retire with that employer if you chose to. These days, it is possible to change careers several times in one year and many times in your career.

At some point, you may realize that the skills that you brought out of college are no longer needed or inadequate to meet the ever-changing demands at the workplace. At other times, all you may need is a different challenge. All these situations may require you to go back to school or take some additional courses to make your position more secured or just for personal fulfillment.
