Asamoah Gyan Can Handle Sunderland Goal Burden

Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan is confident he can handle the expectation of being the first-choice striker at the Stadium of Light.

The 25-year-old is currently the club’s only fit forward following Darren Bent’s move to Aston Villa, and injury to Danny Welbeck and Fraizer Campbell.

“I don’t doubt my quality, whether I am playing with two strikers or just one,” Gyan told BBC Newcastle.

“I think my game is impressive so far, and it’s a good thing for the team.”

The Ghana international has responded well thus far, taking his goal tally for the season to 10 in 28 appearances with the opener in Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, before Michael Dawson and Niko Kranjcar secured all three points for the visitors.

However, defeat means the Wearsiders have now lost three straight games.

“It’s sad that we have lost three games in a row, but the whole team is playing well,” Gyan added.

“Unfortunately we concede silly goals, but if we keep on concentrating on the game then we can do much better because we are playing good football.”

Sunderland signed Gyan from French Ligue 1 club Rennes in August 2010 for a club record fee of £13m.

Didier Drogba Wants 2014 World Cup Shot

Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has pledged his future to the Ivory Coast until the 2014 World Cup.

Drogba will be 36 by the time the Brazil finals arrive, which could be his third World Cup.

“I’m not in the twilight of my career with the Ivory Coast,” Drogba said after reports that this week’s friendly against Mali could be his last game.

“I’ll also play my third World Cup in 2014 in Brazil. If I am called upon, I will answer.”

“I intend to participate in the next two African Nations Cups in 2012 and 2013,” he added.

Ivory Coast beat Mali 1-0 in France on Tuesday, after Elephants captain Drogba assisted in Dider Ya Konan’s match-winning goal after just three minutes.

It was the Chelsea star’s first match since the Ivory Coast exited the 2010 World Cup at the group stage.

“I could not leave like that,” explained a man who led Ivory Coast to the 2006 Nations Cup final.

“The day I decide to retire internationally, I will take care to say goodbye to the fans. I would never creep away on tiptoes.”

The two-time African Footballer of the Year made his international debut in 2002 and is approaching a half-century of goals after winning just over 70 caps.

Ivory Coast resume their qualifying campaign for the 2012 Nations Cup next month when they host Benin.

The Elephants currently lead Group H, which also includes Burundi and Rwanda, with maximum points from two games, four goals scored and none conceded.

Adebayor and Muntari Reflect on Their Tranfers

Adebayor hails Mourinho effect

Emmanuel Adebayor has hailed the impact Jose Mourinho has had on his game since his loan move to Real Madrid.

The Manchester City striker moved to the Spanish capital last month in a deal running to the end of the season.

The La Liga giants will then have an option to sign the 26-year-old on a permanent basis.

Adebayor, who had been pushed to the fringes of the City squad, has already scored twice for his new club, netting in wins over Sevilla and Real Sociedad.

“I’m very happy for scoring two goals,” Adebayor told a press conference in Madrid.

“I will work hard every day to help win our games.

“It is very easy to work with Mourinho. He is an excellent person and he enhances my game.

“He has his own way of dealing with people. He tells you what he expects you to do.”

The change of scenery looks to have sparked an upturn in the Togolese striker’s fortunes, and the presence of several English-speaking team-mates has allowed him to settle.

“I want to thank my team-mates for helping me adapt so easily to this league championship.

“Granero, Ramos, Ronaldo, Pepe, Marcelo… They all speak English, so they understand me and I understand them. I am very happy to be here.”

Real Madrid are seven points behind leaders Barcelona in the Spanish top flight, but Adebayor vowed: “We will fight to the end to win every title.”

The 26-year-old also gave an insight into the lasting impression the deadly terrorist attack on Togo’s team bus ahead of last year’s African Nations Cup has had on him.

“Luckily, I still have both my legs and can play football,” he said.

“I sometimes mistake loud noises for bullets, but I’m over it now and ready to work.”

Muntari showed promise – Bramble

Sunderland defender Titus Bramble believes midfielder Sulley Muntari will only get better after an impressive debut against Stoke City on Saturday.

The 26-year-old Muntari joined the Black Cats on loan after making only 11 appearances for parent club Inter Milan this campaign.

“Sulley was one of the best players on the pitch,” Bramble told BBC Newcastle.

“It’s a shame he got tired but once he’s played one or two games for Sunderland he’ll be even better.”

The Ghana international, who played for Portsmouth before joining Inter, has scored 17 goals in 56 games for his national team.

Benin international midfielder Stephane Sessegnon, signed from Paris Saint Germain for £6m during the transfer window, has also impressed Bramble.

“Sessegnon was fantastic playing behind Asamoah Gyan because he’s got such a good brain he’s hard to pick up,” Bramble added.

“He finds little holes, he gets on the ball for us and gets us going forward. He and Sulley are two fantastic signings from the manager in January.”

Ghana Black Stars Crushes Togo

Michael Oti Adjei

Scorers: Adiyiah, Jonathan. Mensah, Own Goal, Inkoom

Goran Stevanovic’s tenure as Ghana boss got off to the best possible start with a 4-1 victory over Togo in Antwerp, Belgium.

Dominic Adiyiah scored only his second goal in a year-and-a-half to hand Ghana the lead over its eastern neighbors, but Togo fought back with an equalizer via the penalty spot at the start of the second half.

However, the Black Stars fought back to claim victory and the bragging rights with goals from defender Jonathan Mensah and an own-goal after good work from midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah.

Samuel Inkoom who replaced striker Prince Tagoe finished off a perfect move by in-form Dominic Adiyiah to seal the deserved victory.

Stevanovic set out his side in an attacking manner, playing the Adiyiah and Prince Tagoe up-front and the attack-minded midfielders Sulley Muntari and Kwadwo Asamoah behind them.

The result is likely to ensure Ghana retain their place as the top-ranked side in Africa and for Stevanovic it will buy him precious goodwill as he embarks on one of the most difficult jobs in African football.

And for a coach who promised to win and win with style, Stevanovic could not have wished for a better start.

Ghana line-up

Richard Kingson; John Painstil, Isaac Vorsah/Jonathan Mensah, John Mensah/John Boye, David Addy; Anthony Annan/Emmanuel Agyeman Badu, Kwadwo Asamoah, Sulley Muntari/Nana Kwesi Asare, Bernard Kumordzi/Derek Boateng; Dominic Adiyiah, Prince Tagoe/Samuel Inkoom

Nigeria’s Adamu Bent on Clearing His Name

Nigerian official Amos Adamu says he is more desperate to clear his name than to re-enter the top echelons of Fifa.

Last week, world football’s governing body rejected Adamu’s appeal against his three-year ban for breaching Fifa’s Code of Ethics.

The 58-year-old confirmed on Monday that he will take his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.

“I’m desperate to prove my innocence on these corruption charges,” Adamu told BBC Sport.

“I am not desperate to be in either Fifa or the Confederation of African Football (Caf).”

The former Executive Committee member was suspended by Fifa in November after claims he had asked for money in exchange for his 2018 and 2022 World Cup votes.

The Appeals Committee’s announcement on Friday upheld the ban, prompting Adamu to hint that football politics lie behind the decision.

“I can’t say much at the moment [for legal reasons] but I can say there is more to it than meets the eye,” the Nigerian told BBC Sport.

Furthermore, Adamu claims his quotes were taken out of context by the Sunday Times, the British newspaper that conducted the investigation.

“They edited it to make it look as though I said send money to me directly,” the Nigerian explained.

One of the key points of the Sunday Times’ reports surrounded the claim that Adamu had asked for US$800,000 to be directed into his bank account to pay for four pitches in Nigeria.

However, Adamu says he later expressed a preference for the undercover reporters, posing as lobbyists for the United States bid, to ship grass for the pitches to Nigeria themselves – rather than transfer money to any account.

“What was pushed out to the public was heavily edited,” ,” says the head of the West African Football Union (Wafu).

“Of course they wanted to give me money. I said ‘no, if you want to invest in pitches in Nigeria, you buy them and send them to Nigeria yourself’. They cannot put grass into my bank account.

“I’m certainly not a corrupt football administrator.

“Just look at my work with Wafu. Up till now, I still pay the salary of the workers there myself without receiving any money in return.”

Adamu, who maintains his innocence, is still unclear why Fifa’s Appeals Committee rejected his attempt at overturning his ban last week.

The decision means the Caf vice-president cannot re-contest his position on the Executive Committees for both Fifa and Caf when the latter holds its General Assembly on 23 February.

With his administrative career on the ropes, the Nigerian is concentrating his efforts on clearing his name.

“This is a hard time and a long process but the end will justify the means.

“Sometimes it takes a long time for the truth to come out. When the truth comes out, people will know I meant well for football.”

Meanwhile, the Sunday Times has told the BBC that they stand by the story they wrote and feel vindicated by both Fifa and its Appeals Committee.

The 2015 Africa Cup of Nations will be hosted by Morocco while South Africa will host the 2017 tournament. The 2012 African Nations Cup finals are being co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon while 2013 tournament is designated to Libya.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Lubumbashi, DR Congo.

After the DR Congo withdrew its bid, Morocco and South Africa were the only countries bidding to stage the tournament .

The President of the South African Football Association (Safa) Kirsten Nematandani told reporters after the announcement that he was happy that they were awarded the 2017 edition.

Muntari in Sunderland Talk

Ghana Muntari

Sunderland have been granted permission to discuss a deal to sign Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari.

If terms are agreed, the 26-year-old is expected to join the Black Cats on loan until the end of the season.

Muntari played in the Premier League while at Portsmouth during the 2007-08 campaign before leaving for Inter.

The Ghana international has struggled to secure first-team football at the San Siro and handed in a transfer request earlier this month.

Muntari has helped the club to two successive Serie A titles and the 2010 Champions League crown.
Myrtle Pudding

But he was out of favour under Rafael Benitez at the start of the season and has failed to convince new manager Leonardo of his worth, making only one Serie A start this term.

If he does move to the Stadium of Light, he will be joining international team-mates Asamoah Gyan and John Mensah.
