Essien to return to Black Stars in March

Michael Essien

Michael Essien says he will return to the international fold for Ghana’s next Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo, in March 2011.

The Chelsea midfielder temporarily put his Black Stars career on hold in August, after recovering from a long-term injury.

Essien has not played for Ghana since the Nations Cup in January.

A knee injury sustained in Ghana’s first game kept him out of the rest of the tournament and the 2010 World Cup.

But the Ghana Football Association (GFA) now says Essien will be back for the Brazzaville clash.

“Essien never said he will not play for Ghana again,” GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi said.

“He merely asked for time away from the team and has now told us he will be available for selection in March,” he continued.

Essien has returned to action for Chelsea since the beginning of the season.
